Jerusha Hubert

Jerusha Hubert testimony

When Father Mike asked me to write a paragraph or two on Stewardship, I wondered what I should say. "Why me?”  After all Larry is the one who pays the bills, he writes the checks - blah, blah, blah...

Larry and I have been tithing for over 20 years.  We give the first ten percent back to God. God tells us in His Word that He will bless us –and He has!  We have learned that we can’t out-give God. So, what new can I add to that? Then I began thinking about it. Stewardship isn’t only about money, is it?  I looked up a Scripture I always loved about being openhanded:

Deuteronomy 15: 7....you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him.

And verse 11: Therefore I command you, you shall open wide your hand to your brother to the needy and to the poor in the land.

This means a lot to Larry and me. We try to practice it. Often very imperfectly, try to give of ourselves, not only of our money, but also of our talents, our time, our caring - to all of God’s people.

The question “What would Jesus do?” is not a bad one to use as a guide – a place to start. I try to open my hands, my heart, to be there for others with whatever Jesus seems to be showing me is good or needed.  I try to pray for that open hand with everything I do, with my money, my time and especially, my heart.
